There are just certain pieces every women needs to have in her closet. Yes, it’s time to talk about staple pieces. Staple pieces are very versatile and can be mixed and matched in so many ways making your wardrobe look ten times the size. Now of all possible staples, the absolute, must have piece looks good on all shapes and sizes, shows off the curves, defines the waist, and makes you look taller! Sounds like miracle worker right?

Close, but not quite.  … Just a great piece of cloth called a pencil skirt.  For those of you thinking the pencil is only something an office chic wears, think again.  A pencil skirt styled the right way can take you from day to night and make you look like the sexiest of  sirens.  The trick is that you have to evaluate your body and pick the cut that works best for your figure.  Be aware the cuts of a pencil either will fall straight from the hip or taper in. Follow the Babs tips for the right cut!

B.A.B.’s Tips

Pencil for the Hourglass Girl- You are gonna want a skirt that is fitted and tapers slightly.  If it falls straight from the hip you will look like a rectangle and if it tapers in too much your hips will look to big.

Pencil for the Ruler Girl-You are gonna want a skirt that is very fitted and tapers in quite a bit at the bottom this will give you the illusion of an hourglass figure.

Pencil for The Pear-You’ll have to size up and get the skirt taken in on the waist. It may be a bit of a pain but it is well worth the investment. There is nothing worse than clothes that are too tight, just because it zips at the waist doesn’t mean its the right size!

Pencil  for  The Apple-You can choose a flowy top that hits at the hip masking the tummy, in this case make sure the pencil skirt is tapered and fitted so you aren’t flowy everywhere.  Another option is to tuck the top in and put a thicker belt over the tummy, masking the bulge and giving your outfit a boost with a great accessory.

High Waisted vs Low Waisted ?   If your torso is normal to long, high waisted is a good option.  It will flatten your tummy and elongate you.  However if you have big boobs and a short torso it will make you look smaller and over accentuate your boobs so you should pick a lower waisted skirt to elongate the body.

Above the Knee vs Below the Knee ?   If your a petite women hem the skirt right above the knee so you wear the clothes and the clothes don’t wear you!  If your taller it is more of a preference issue, so take your pick!

Fashionably Yours,

Shoes: Marciano Beryl Sandal $178 click HERE  (also have them in nude they are a classic heel highly recommend! )

OK so I gotta start by saying yeah, I know I look far too white in these pics. Should have got a spray tan, but too late now!

So lets get down to  the bizness at hand and talk about another trend…

The Hi- Lo, aka The Mullet!

It made its entre’e vu last year and is still standing strong for Spring Summer 2013. This trend has fully taken off and can be seen in soooo many different pieces of apparel. Whether the Hi-Lo is a shirt, blazer, dress, or skirt, it always gives your outfit a unique, edgy, and dramatic look.

I, myself, love this trend and find it very visually appealing and feminine. In my book it trumps the maxi because of two added benefits; It allows you to show a little leg without being too much, (and yes there is such a thing as too much leg) and the shorter hemline in front shows off your shoes! What girl doesn’t love that!

B.A.B. s Tips

-If its a skirt, make sure you pair it with a fitted top. The whole outfit doesn’t need to be flowy

-You can take many of the Hi-Lo pieces from day to night by wearing a sandal for day and a wedge or even a heel for a night out, and switch out your day bag with a cute clutch.

-As always, don’t go overboard with this trend.  It’s ok to incorporate one or two Hi-Lo pieces into your wardrobe this season but don’t go Hi-Lo crazy.

-Don’t get a Hi-Lo with a bunch of ruffle you will look like a flamenco dancer, not cute! A little is ok, but when it has more ridges than a potato chip, it’s time to pass.

Tweed is back, revamped, and ready to be one of the must have fabrics for Spring 2013!  Now before you start thinking about that old coat in granny’s closet, that’s not the tweed I mean. Leave the old lady’s coat alone. The tweed I mean is the new tweed, the one with the hint of metallic threading to brighten it into a modern look. Everything I secretly have always loved about tweed is still there though. The wonderful texture, and of course the vintage feel are on full display. A good staple piece to have might be a tweed jacket because you can throw it on with so many things.

A few pieces I found for a great deal are:

tweed shorts HERE

tweed jacket HERE   and  HERE

B.A.B.S  Tips

  • To make this heavier fabric work for spring you can try purchasing it in a pastel or coral, the IT color of the season
  • Funk it up a bit!  Throw a vintage tee under a classic tweed, I love mixing contrasting themes it gives your outfit a uniqueness
  • For the most part I’m not into the head to toe look, so stick with one tweed piece whether it be a jacket, skirt, short or an accessory
  • If its still crisp out, wear it with tights under a pair of shorts or a skirt!
